Retaining Wall Contractors Ireland
Retaining walls do far more than hold back soil. They protect buildings, manage changing ground levels, support landscaping, and provide the structural stability required for residential, commercial and civil engineering projects.
At Alvora Construction, we design and construct reinforced concrete and Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) retaining walls engineered for strength, durability and long-term performance. Working alongside structural engineers and architects, we deliver retaining wall solutions that integrate robust waterproofing, drainage and reinforced concrete construction to withstand the demands of Ireland's climate.

Why Retaining Walls Matter
Providing Structural Stability, Ground Retention and Long-Term Site Protection
Retaining walls are engineered structures that provide essential support where ground levels change. Whether for a residential home, basement, commercial development, or landscaped garden, a properly constructed retaining wall improves stability, protects surrounding structures, and creates safe, usable outdoor spaces.
Where Retaining Walls Are Used
Engineered Retaining Wall Solutions for Residential, Commercial and Civil Projects
Retaining walls play a vital role in modern construction, providing structural support wherever ground levels change or soil needs to be safely retained. From private residential developments to large-scale commercial and infrastructure projects, retaining walls create stable, usable spaces while protecting buildings and surrounding landscapes for decades to come.
At Alvora Construction, we deliver reinforced concrete and ICF retaining walls tailored to the unique engineering requirements of every project.
Luxury Homes
Many architect-designed homes are built on sloping or elevated sites to maximise views and make the most of the surrounding landscape. Retaining walls create level building platforms, support landscaped gardens, and provide structural stability while maintaining the property's architectural design.
Split-Level Sites
Building on sloping ground requires carefully engineered retaining structures to safely manage changing ground levels. Our retaining walls allow homeowners and developers to unlock the full potential of challenging sites while ensuring long-term structural performance.
Built for Every Site
Whether supporting a luxury home, commercial development, basement or infrastructure project, every retaining wall we construct is built to engineered specifications using high-quality reinforced concrete or Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF). Combined with professional waterproofing, drainage and quality-controlled construction, our retaining wall solutions are designed to deliver strength, stability and long-term performance in even the most challenging ground conditions.

Drainage Behind Retaining Walls
Managing Water Pressure for Long-Term Structural Performance
A retaining wall is only as strong as the drainage system behind it. While reinforced concrete and ICF walls provide exceptional structural strength, poor drainage can lead to a build-up of hydrostatic pressure, placing unnecessary stress on the wall and increasing the risk of movement, cracking or premature failure.
At Alvora Construction, every retaining wall is designed with a comprehensive drainage strategy that works alongside the structural design to safely manage groundwater and surface water. By controlling water pressure from the outset, we help maximise the lifespan, stability and performance of the retaining structure.
Hydrostatic Pressure Management
Water trapped behind a retaining wall creates hydrostatic pressure that increases the load on the structure. Our drainage systems are designed to relieve this pressure by directing water safely away from the wall before it can build up.
Free-Draining Stone Backfill
We use clean, free-draining aggregate behind retaining walls to encourage rapid water movement while reducing pressure on the structure. This also helps protect waterproofing systems from unnecessary stress.
Geotextile Filter Membranes
Filter membranes are installed to separate the drainage stone from surrounding soils, preventing fine particles from clogging the drainage system and maintaining long-term performance.
Perforated Land Drains
Perforated drainage pipes are installed at the base of the retaining wall to collect groundwater and carry it safely away from the structure. Correct positioning and falls are essential to ensure efficient drainage.
Drainage Outlets
Collected water is discharged through engineered drainage outlets connected to suitable surface water systems or approved discharge points, preventing water from accumulating behind the wall.
Engineered Backfill Materials
Carefully selected backfill materials are placed and compacted in controlled layers to provide structural support while maintaining excellent drainage characteristics.
Weep Holes (Where Appropriate)
On certain retaining wall designs, weep holes provide an additional drainage path by allowing trapped water to escape through the wall, helping to reduce hydrostatic pressure where specified by the project engineer.
Future Maintenance Access
Where required, drainage systems are designed to allow inspection and maintenance, helping ensure the retaining wall continues to perform effectively throughout its service life.

Our Retaining Wall Construction Process
Every retaining wall we construct follows a carefully planned process to ensure structural integrity, effective drainage, and long-term performance. From initial excavation to final backfilling, each stage is completed with precision, quality control, and strict adherence to the project's engineering specifications.
1. Site Assessment & Setting Out
We begin by reviewing the engineer's drawings, assessing ground conditions, and accurately setting out the retaining wall to ensure precise positioning and excavation levels.
2. Excavation & Ground Preparation
The site is excavated to the required depth, with reduced levels established and unsuitable material removed. The formation is prepared to provide a stable base for the retaining wall foundation.
3. Foundations & Reinforcement
Concrete foundations are constructed using engineered reinforcement, ensuring the retaining wall has the structural support required to safely resist ground loads and long-term pressure.
4. Wall Construction
Depending on the project, we install reinforced concrete formwork or Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF), position all reinforcement, and complete controlled concrete pours to create a durable structural retaining wall.
5. Waterproofing & Drainage Installation
Once the wall has achieved the required strength, we install structural waterproofing systems, protection boards, free-draining backfill, filter membranes, and perforated land drains to manage groundwater and reduce hydrostatic pressure.
6. Backfilling & Final Inspection
The retaining wall is carefully backfilled using approved materials and compacted in controlled layers. Before completion, every element is inspected to ensure it complies with the engineer's specifications and our own rigorous quality standards.
